Airports in Spain by Autonomous Community

It’s that time of year again. The holidays? Yes. But rather than a white Christmas, I’m dreaming of airports in Spain. Why? Because it’s time to start thinking about renewal as an auxiliar de conversacion. Or maybe next year will be your first year, and you’re not quite sure how to choose a region.

Since the application period will open just after the holiday season, it’s a good idea to start planning where you’d like to go now. Maybe you want to go to where the auxiliar income is the highest compared to the local residents. This is a great plan for living your day-to-day life in Spain, but what about our international adventure seeking readers?

For those of you who want to see as much as possible in a relatively short amount of time, it may be a good idea to make your regional choices based on which communities have the best access to airports.

These are the different community groups available in Profex, the auxiliar registration system. For a complete guide to Profex, click here. As you may know, you can only choose one option from each group, so I am going to break down what types of flights are available in each region sorted by groups A, B, and C.

All prices listed below are for round trip direct flights. Costs will vary depending on time of year, but you can still get an idea of the possibilities available from each region. For up-to-date pricing, follow each airport link.

Best Picks for Airports in Spain

Group A: Pais Vasco. The Basque Country is the clear winner here, as it has 3 airports within a relatively small geographic space. Bilbao has great domestic and international options, and even the smaller airport in Vitoria-Gasteiz offers international destinations.

Group B: Catalonia. As a major international airport, your options are limitless. The only close competitor in this group is the Canary Islands, which is also a great choice if you want to try island life.

Group C: the obvious choice is Madrid. You can really take advantage of your travel time if you’re based in Madrid. If you need a change of pace, the Balearic Islands and Valencia are both great choices. Be careful of Andalusia, if your intention is being near airports. Even thought Malaga has a fantastic international airport, if you get placed in Huelva, Jaen, or Cordoba, you’ll need to account for transportation to the closest airport.

Worst Picks for Airports in Spain

Group A: La Rioja. Most small airports at least have flights to Madrid and Barcelona, which are major international airports. La Rioja only flies to Palma.

Group B: Castilla-La Mancha. No. Airports. In some cases, it’s not so bad. Toledo isn’t too far from Madrid, for example, so if you’re placed here, do not despair.

Group C:  This is a toss up between Castilla y Leon and Murcia. The first one has domestic flights, but nothing international. The second one has international flights, but nothing domestic.

Final Thoughts

We all know that as auxiliars, we don’t have the final say in where we end up, but it’s still a good idea to have some sort of strategy in place. If international travel is your goal, where the airports in Spain are located should be a part of your strategy.

However, if you are placed somewhere without easy access to flights, you still have the option to travel internationally on longer holidays, and do a bit more slow travel during regular weekends. Go on a road trip. Explore your region, province, or city. Your adventure awaits.

San Javier in Murcia is also really hard to get to without taking a taxi or having access to a car. It can be done but it’s a HUGE headache.

It is a bit of a headache to get there, as there is no public transit however so you need to have a friend with a car (who is willing to drive you at 6:30am as there is only 1 flight out) or you need to take a taxi for 25euros.
